However, this holiday season could look a little different than most. Since we have been spending so much more time at home this year, and probably will throughout the holidays too, it is important to know how to safeguard your home from one of the most common disaster threats – water damage.

Water Damage Restoration Charleston

Nothing puts a damper on the festivities of the holidays like dealing with water damage. Since there are so many different potential sources and causes of water damage, it can seem overwhelming to even attempt preventing possible water damage. That is where our water damage restoration experts come in. We are going to give you some tips and easy things for you to do in and around your home to help reduce the risk of water damage and keep your home happy and healthy for the holidays.

  • Start with a visual inspection. Make sure to be extra attentive to basements, garages, attics, under cabinets, the ground around rain gutters, roof tops, and window wells since these are all common places water damage can go unnoticed. Make sure these areas are dry and show no signs of any excess moisture or water damage. Make it a habit to check these places periodically to be sure that they stay clear of any signs of water damage, and that there are no cracks or leaks in sight. You should also inspect in and around all household appliances that use water; dishwashers, water heaters, and washing machines. Look for any pooling or leaking, and make sure they are all in good condition.
  • Speaking of appliances, it is important to perform routine maintenance on all household appliances that use water. Dishwashers, washing machines, and water heaters are all common culprits of water damage in homes. Water hoses that run to these machines can weaken over time and become prone to leaks. Make sure that you are following manufacturer’s guidelines when it comes to installation, use, and maintenance of these appliances.
  • Be aware of water outside of your home. Disconnect hoses that are not in use to help prevent any water from building up inside them. Rain gutters that are cluttered with dirt and debris create blockages, which can lead to water overflow when it rains. Keep your gutters cleaned out so that they can properly direct water away from the foundation of your home. If you notice water pooling around your home’s foundation when it rains, then consider replacing your downspouts. Downspouts should direct water at least 3 feet away from your home to prevent seepage in through the foundation.
  • Know where your water main shut off valve is. If you plan on being away from home for extended periods of time this holiday season, you may want to shut off the main water line to your home while you are gone. Also, if you find yourself in a situation where water is overflowing or flooding into your home from a pipe or appliance, you will need to know where your water main valve is and how to shut it off.
